Nitrogen Tank Blanketing in Northern Illinois

Nitrogen is utilized for numerous purposes in the specialty gas industry. Other than being used in food and drug preparation, it is used in the preservation of varying (typically highly flammable liquid) substances. This technique of preventative maintenance is termed blanketing in the specialty gases industry.

In the majority of tank vessels there is headspace that, left unfilled, can begin the oxidation process for substances that are susceptible to this occurrence. To keep these substances in their purest state during transportation and storage, high purity, dry nitrogen is used to replace the air that usually occupies the headspace in these tanks.

To control the amount of nitrogen that inhabits the tank, a valve control system on the tank controls nitrogen amounts. The valve adjusts to maintain constant positive pressure in the headspace of the tank. While the tank is emptying, there will be a substantial increase of nitrogen to compensate the empty space.
